What is the difference between “accreditation” and “certification”?
Some schools or programs may seek full “accreditation,” which consists of a full review of their virtual program across all four clusters (all 14 standards) of the National Standards for Quality Online Programs, while some schools or programs may only seek a review of one, two, or three of the standards clusters, resulting in receiving “certification” in specific cluster areas. AccredVEd offers both options to meet the specific needs of schools or programs.
Who is eligible to apply for AccredVEd’s accreditation or certification?
Any K-12 institution or program offering virtual courses can apply, including fully virtual schools, supplemental online programs, charter schools, and private institutions exploring digital learning. AccredVEd evaluates readiness during the initial inquiry phase to ensure the program has sufficient documentation and alignment with the National Standards for Quality Online Programs
How long does the accreditation process take?
The timeline for a full accreditation review typically spans 9 months. Schools or programs seeking certification for individual clusters can expect the process to span 2-3 months per cluster.
What costs are associated with AccredVEd’s accreditation and certification services?
Schools and programs seeking a full accreditation review will be charged $7,500, and their accreditation will remain active for 6 years. Re-accreditation will incur the same charge (subject to regular rate increases). The cost for certification for an individual cluster (valid for 6 years) is $3,500 per cluster with re-certification at the same rate, also subject to regular rate increases.
What if a school or program does not meet all the criteria during the review?
AccredVEd’s approach is grounded in continuous improvement. If certain standards are not met, the school or program receives actionable feedback and recommendations. School and program leaders have the opportunity to address these areas before seeking a follow-up review.
Is dual or synchronous accreditation available through AccredVED?
Yes, AccredVEd, through the Virtual Learning Leadership Alliance, has established partnerships with Cognia, Middle States Commission on Higher Education and Western Association of School and Colleges (WASC) to support dual or synchronous accreditation opportunities. Information about applying for dual or synchronous accreditation with these accrediting bodies is shared with programs during the client onboarding process.
How often do schools and programs need to renew their accreditation or certification?
Accredited and certified schools and programs undergo a renewal cycle every 6 years.
Are there resources to help schools and programs prepare for the accreditation or certification review?
Yes. AccredVEd provides interested schools and programs a readiness self-assessment tool, coupled with customized consultation, to help school and program leaders determine whether they are ready for a formal review.
Does AccredVEd’s accreditation and certification apply to all grades (K–12)?
Yes. AccredVEd’s accreditation and certification is designed to address the full spectrum of K-12 virtual learning, ensuring coverage of all grade levels. School and program leaders can highlight specific grade-band practices within their documentation and artifact submissions.
What happens after a school or program achieves accreditation or certification?
Schools and programs receive an official accreditation or certification letter, an accreditation or certification certificate, a digital badge or icon, as well as ongoing recognition on AccredVEd’s website. Accredited and certified institutions will remain engaged with AccredVEd for continuous improvement updates, best practices, and the latest developments in virtual learning.
